There are plenty of valid reasons to not play too many video games, but the idea that you rot the brain already can not be one of them. The Wall Street Journal reports on a new study by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco shows that "older adults improved cognitive controls such as multi-tasking and the ability to maintain attention by playing a specially designed video game". In fact, the study shows even that certain video games can even produce lasting improvements in conditions such as depression and disorder attention deficit. This does not mean that all games are potentially useful for mental illness, of course, and the scientists emphasize that it is too early to tell if the game is a net positive or negative for the mental faculties.
